These figures assume the whole salary is taxable, is the same every month, and that no tax credits or exemptions apply. Monthly tax is the yearly tax divided by 12 and rounded to the nearest rupee. The last column is before any other deductions on your payslip, such as provident fund or loan repayments.
How to read the table
Two numbers matter: the tax in rupees and the effective rate. The effective rate is the tax divided by your salary, and it is always lower than the rate of the highest band you reach, because only the part of your income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate.
A raise never leaves you with less money. At Rs 150,000 a month the tax is Rs 6,000, leaving Rs 144,000. At Rs 200,000 a month the tax rises to Rs 13,000, leaving Rs 187,000. The higher rate applies only to the extra income.
Estimating a salary that is not in the table
Multiply the monthly salary by 12, find the band that income reaches in our slab guide, and add the tax on income below that band to the rate times the amount above its start. For example, Rs 275,000 a month is Rs 3,300,000 a year. It reaches the 25% band that starts at Rs 3,200,000, so the tax is Rs 316,000 + 25% of Rs 100,000, which is Rs 341,000 a year or about Rs 28,417 a month.
Why your payslip may show a different number
- Taxable versus gross salary. The slabs apply to taxable income. Some allowances are exempt or limited, so the figure on your salary certificate may be lower than your gross pay.
- Bonuses and raises. Tax is based on your annual total. A bonus month or a mid-year raise can change the amount deducted in a single month.
- Credits and rebates. Certain investments, donations and other items can reduce the final tax.
- Other deductions. Provident fund, loans and similar items are separate from income tax.
- Rule changes. Rates can be revised after a budget. Check the latest FBR notification, and ask your accounts department how your employer calculates the monthly deduction.
